Although the distillery it’s made in is almost 100 years old, English Harbour rum was created in 1994 and named after the part of Antigua which used to house Nelson’s Dockyard. It seemed apt, given the British Navy’s long association with rum and its longstanding practice of distributing a daily tot of the spirit to sailors – a practice which was only stopped in 1970. Today English Harbour continues its nautical associations through sponsorship of Antigua Sailing Week, during which time many sailors do their best to imbibe a daily ration of rum.
English Harbour 5 Year Old has flavours of cherry, banana bread, coconut and toasted oak. The distillery reccommend trying it in the Antigua Kiss cocktail: stir together 40ml English Harbour 5 Year Old, 20ml apricot brandy, 40ml pineapple juice and 20ml orange juice, then pour into an ice-filled hurricane glass.
English Harbour 5 Year Old has won numerous awards since its launch in 1994, including the prestigious Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in both 2004 and 2005.
